IRS Introduces Direct File for Free Online Tax Filing in Select States
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced the nationwide availability of Direct File, a new service enabling eligible taxpayers in 12 states to file their federal tax returns online for free. This move, ahead of the April 15 deadline, marks a significant leap in making tax filing more accessible and straightforward.
Direct File, after a successful pilot phase, is praised for its simplicity and no-cost approach, allowing early users to submit their 2023 federal tax returns directly to the IRS without fees. “This initiative simplifies the tax filing process, offering a free, user-friendly option to the public,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel.
The service is designed for individuals with simpler tax situations and is now open to eligible taxpayers in the following states:
Arizona
California
Florida
Massachusetts
Nevada
New Hampshire
New York
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Washington State
Wyoming
Direct File supports taxpayers who receive W-2 income, claim specific tax credits, and meet other criteria, aiming to streamline the filing process. Users can initiate their tax returns at directfile.irs.gov and complete them before the April deadline. The system guides users through each step, ensuring accuracy and transparency.
For those ineligible for Direct File, the IRS redirects them to the Free File program, which provides free online tax preparation for individuals earning $79,000 or less in 2023.
The IRS encourages all eligible taxpayers in the pilot states to explore Direct File as a convenient, free option for filing their federal tax returns.
