USCIS Releases New Filing Guide for the Keeping Families Together Initiative

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a significant update as part of its Keeping Families Together initiative. Starting August 19, 2024, USCIS will accept applications through a new electronic form, Form I-131F, Application for Parole in Place for Certain Noncitizen Spouses and Stepchildren of U.S. Citizens. This initiative is aimed at streamlining the process and ensuring that families are not unnecessarily separated due to immigration status.
Key Updates Include:
- Availability of Form I-131F: The form will be accessible exclusively on uscis.gov starting August 19, 2024. No other forms will be accepted for the Keeping Families Together applications.
- Guidance for Applicants: USCIS has published a Filing Guide for Form I-131F, to assist individuals in navigating the new online filing system.
- Online Filing Mandate: All applications for the initiative must be submitted online; there are no paper form options. Each applicant, including minors, is required to file a separate Form I-131F and must establish their own USCIS online account.
Additional Resources and Support
USCIS has updated the Key Questions and Answers on the Keeping Families Together webpage to provide further clarity on the process. Moreover, prospective applicants can expect more detailed information soon via a Federal Register notice that will outline additional guidelines and answer more specific queries about the program.
Protecting Yourself from Immigration Scams
With the introduction of new processes, it’s crucial to remain vigilant against fraud. USCIS reminds applicants to seek legal advice only from authorized professionals, including U.S.-licensed attorneys or accredited representatives from Department of Justice-recognized organizations. USCIS has provided resources and guidance on how to avoid scams on their Avoid Scams webpage.
This initiative by USCIS reflects an ongoing commitment to support noncitizen family members of U.S. citizens by providing them a legal pathway to stay in the United States, fostering family unity while ensuring compliance with immigration laws.
