USCIS Announces 36-Month Extension for Green Card Renewals
Starting September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will enhance the renewal process for Green Cards by automatically extending the validity of Permanent Resident Cards for 36 months for lawful permanent residents who submit Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. Previously, the extension period was 24 months.
This update is aimed at lawful permanent residents who are renewing an expiring or expired Green Card. The revised Form I-90 receipt notices will now indicate a 36-month extension from the existing expiration date shown on the Green Card. Starting from the effective date, USCIS has been issuing updated receipt notices to applicants with pending Form I-90 applications.
These updated receipt notices serve as proof of continued lawful status and employment authorization when presented alongside an expired Green Card. This change is particularly beneficial for applicants facing extended processing times, ensuring they maintain proof of lawful permanent resident status while awaiting their renewed Green Card.
Additionally, for individuals who do not possess their Green Card and require evidence of their status, USCIS offers a solution. After filing Form I-90, individuals may contact the USCIS Contact Center to schedule an appointment at a USCIS Field Office, where they can obtain an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp as interim proof of status.
