USCIS Announces Key Changes to Form I-131 Effective October 11

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced updates to Form I-131, which is crucial for individuals applying for various travel-related documents. These changes are important for those seeking Advance Parole, Re-entry Permits, and Refugee Travel Documents. If you’re planning to travel outside the United States, while awaiting your green card or for any other specific immigration reasons, this update is essential to keep in mind.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new version of Form I-131 and what it means for you.
What is Form I-131?
Form I-131 is officially known as the Application for Travel Documents, used by individuals who need official permission to leave and re-enter the United States under specific conditions. The three primary uses of Form I-131 include:
- Advance Parole: Allows individuals with a pending green card application to travel abroad and return to the U.S. without abandoning their application.
- Re-entry Permits: Issued to lawful permanent residents (green card holders) who need to travel outside the U.S. for extended periods, ensuring they can re-enter without issues.
- Refugee Travel Documents: Issued to refugees or asylees in the U.S. who wish to travel abroad and return safely to the U.S.
What’s Changing with the New Form I-131?
USCIS is rolling out several key changes to Form I-131, effective October 11, 2024:
- New Name: The form is now titled “Application for Travel Documents, Parole Documents, and Arrival/Departure Records,” reflecting a more comprehensive scope.

Why the Changes?

- Clarified Instructions and Eligibility Requirements: The new edition aims to be clearer and easier to understand, reducing the chances of application errors.
- Enhanced Security Features: The update strengthens security measures to prevent fraud or misuse of travel documents.
- Alignment with Current Regulations: The changes ensure the form is up-to-date with current immigration laws and procedures.
Key Dates to Remember
