No Lottery. No Cap.
For Indian professionals at multinational companies, the L-1 visa is one of the most underutilized U.S. work visa options. Unlike H-1B, there is no annual lottery and no numerical cap. If you qualify, transfer can happen within months.
L-1A: Managers and Executives
L-1A is for managers and executives and leads directly to an EB-1C green card—historically shorter backlogs for Indian nationals than EB-2 or EB-3, with no labor certification required. Your role must involve managing a department, supervising professional staff, and exercising operational discretion. Job title alone is not enough.
L-1B: Specialized Knowledge
L-1B suits Indian IT professionals with proprietary knowledge of company systems, platforms, or processes. USCIS applies a narrow standard—document what makes your knowledge specific to the company, not general industry expertise.
Blanket L: Large Company Fast Track
Major Indian IT firms (Tata, Infosys, Wipro, HCL) and global tech companies often hold Blanket L approvals, enabling faster consular processing rather than individual USCIS adjudication.
Common Pitfalls
Third-party client-site arrangements face heightened USCIS scrutiny. Document the petitioning employer’s supervisory role carefully. Plan for potential Administrative Processing (AP) delays at Indian consular posts.
Duration
L-1A: up to 3 years initial, 7 year maximum. L-1B: up to 3 years initial, 5 year maximum. Both require one continuous year abroad with the employer in the past three years.
