What is the Diversity Visa Program?
The Diversity Visa Program, also known as the Green Card Lottery, stands as a beacon of hope for individuals around the globe aspiring to make the United States their new home. Eligibility Criteria for the Diversity Visa Program
There are two main requirements when applying for a Diversity Visa:
- Country of Birth
The U.S. Department of State delineates eligible countries each year, primarily focusing on nations that have sent fewer than 50,000 immigrants to the United States over the past five years.
For the 2023 application period, natives from the following countries are not eligible to apply:
- Bangladesh
- Brazil
- Canada
- China (including Hong Kong SAR)
- Colombia
- Dominican Republic
- El Salvador
- Haiti
- Honduras
- India
- Jamaica
- Mexico
- Nigeria
- Pakistan
- Philippines
- South Korea
- United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories
- Venezuela

- Education and Work Experience
In addition to country eligibility, applicants must also meet certain education and work experience thresholds. A minimum of a high school education or its equivalent, or two years of work experience within the past five years in a field that requires at least two years of training, is requisite.
Selection and Notification
The U.S. Department of State employs a computer-generated draw to randomly select entries from among all the submitted applications. Being selected DOES NOT guarantee that you will receive a visa. Rather, it means you are now eligible to apply for a Diversity Visa.
Unlike other visa processes, the Diversity Visa Program does not send individual notification to applicants. Instead, entrants must check their status online through the DV Entrant Status Check, available on the Electronic Diversity Visa Program website.
If your entry is selected, you will be directed to a confirmation page, providing further instructions on how to proceed, which includes completing the immigrant visa application. The Diversity Visa Program adheres to a strict numerical limit, and visas are issued in ascending order until the numerical limit is reached. Hence, it is crucial to act promptly if selected.
